Last week was the Dieppe international Kite Festival. There were some incredible creations most of which would fly. From flying cows, crabs and fish to a visual firecracker of a display of worldwide traditional kites.
We have been having superb weather in the Pays de Caux. Harvest almost complete and amazing skies over the plateau. Some of my sketch book meanderings, this time in watercolours.
I will at least use them in the studio for larger pieces.
I stumbled across this gallery of Sargent's watercolours. He used watercolour in such a free way and added gouache and graphite pencil where he needed it. Have a look at this gallery by scrolling through.
Georges Braque (born in Normandy) moved back to the Normandy coast in the 1930's. He lived in Varengeville for a while and his tomb is in the cemetery of the church for which he designed the "Arbre de Jesse" stained glass window in 1954. It is one of the most beautiful churches around and is in a wonderful cliff-top location favoured by many painters.
A couple of new cavée paintings were added to the ones for exhibition. Both showing the extraordinary light beneath the dense foliage in the height of summer.
Since 13th of August we have been extremely busy with a new exhibition and a vernissage on the 14th. We introduced the french to Pims ( un cocktail anglais) which went down extremely well. We had some real luck with the weather and the sky cleared about 2 hours before the first guests arrived. The show was well received and some sales were made.
All the paintings were made since March and are of the cavées and falaises.
